Grata pelas vezes que me fez sentir cuidada, desejada e amada.

Grata pelos presentes que me dá e me fazem sentir importante e especial.
  • O casaco italiano aguarda a viagem tão esperada.

The good in people...

I need to start seeing the good in people. Otherwise, I’m going to die alone or turn to bestialism soon. So, I spent the last hour doing a list of good things people around me have. Without making one single bad observation – because, you know, when I say something good about someone, I always remember to say something bad too, even if it’s a tiny little bearable seen criticism.

Here it goes:

. dear mommy:

Well, I always thought that what I liked about her the most was her professional success. That’s a lie, because I always thought that she would exaggerate on most of her professional tales. What I really, really like about her the most is that she has this amazing capacity of solving a huge problem of mine in a blink of an eye. That’s pretty amazing of her.

. dear daddy:

Oh, daddy was always low on my list of good, admirable people. What I really like about him is that he spoils me to death, and has no qualms on spending tons of money on me. The amount of money he spends on me makes me feel like a princess, worthy of everything, and I think nobody will ever be able to gift me like him. Of course, nobody has the amount of money he has!

. dear brother:

Hum, that’s a hard one. Really hard one. I like it that I’m his role model. He makes me feel like a leader. I like it that even though we don’t get along, what I think and say still matters to him. My brother cares. And he’s pretty amazing when he feels like doing favors and helping people.

. my sexy girlfriend:

That’s easy, I like a lot things about her. What I like the most is that she thinks I’m the best. She’s the most supporting fan I have.

. my lovely friends:

C, she’s good company when she wants to be. R, she’s funny, and very good company when we go out. F,… oh god… she’s smart? Or seems to, at least…

Okay, that wasn’t so hard. Let’s try pointing out good characteristics of people I despise, or that have let me down recently. Let’s see how it goes.

. work snake number 1: she has pretty hair… and I guess she works well enough; she’s competent... well, enough competent, anyway.

. work snake number 2: she also has pretty hair… and she helps people, she does voluntary work, and she really is an asset to the society.

. italian mother snake of all: she has a pretty smile… and that’s pretty much it…

. portuguese little pig: she was cute… and pretty…

. icelandic little pig: she… makes an effort?

Oh god, that was hard. I could have written tons and tons of things I don’t like about them all. I think I’ll just start fucking animals now, and prepare to die alone, surrounded by them, in like… 10 years or so.

Bambuzal

English

I was four when my father put me in an english school. I learned the language slowly, and I was fourteen when I finished the conversation course, after the basic, intermediate, advanced and post-advanced levels. When I was sixteen, the house cleaner my family had at the time said she needed my help opening a “file” in the computer. She pronounced it as *fi-lé*. That was when my mother decided I should teach the house cleaner english, and that was when I started teaching the language.

When I was eighteen, I came home to live with my parents after a year on the streets, and since my father was very much disappointed on me, I wasn’t getting any money out of him. I started giving cheap english lessons to my friends at college in order to get some bucks. But it was nothing – most of the lessons were about the verbs “to be” and “to have”, since everyone’s english in Brazil is mostly awful.

When I was twenty-two, I was the best replacement teacher at my college, and I finally started charging good money for my english classes, even though my biochemical and chemical classes were more popular. When I was twenty-four, it happened: a german girl at my german classes heard me talking in english and told me that it was simply perfect. I, of course, doubted her, but she then suggested that I took the TOEFL and saw it for myself. I never did, but I was confident then about my english.

When I was twenty-five, I got into university, and being surrounded by undereducated students helped me get an endless list of potential english students. And then it started: I began with few students, of a lower level, and in one year I had a waiting list for classes and was teaching high-advanced classes. When I was twenty-six, a friend of my mother – a native-speaker of english, told me again that my english was perfect, and that I had the accent of a New-Yorker. This time, I took the TOEFL. And I aced it.

Now, I am twenty-eight and I am travelling around the world. I have finally believed that my english is good. I make many mistakes, regarding spelling and prepositions, but nothing that a native-speaker wouldn’t mistake either. I talk to people from everywhere, and I just know my english is awesome. Native-speakers usually stick to talking to me, since I’m the only one that gets the jokes that involve a great understanding of the language in order to be understood. If I talk to someone that really talks english, I have no problems getting what I need. A german guy actually turned me down because he couldn’t believe I was brazilian – my english was just too good. Five minutes ago, an american from California just told me: “I can’t believe you’re not noth-american! I could swear you were from New York or something!”.

I feel cool. Proud of myself. I can talk anywhere, with anyone I want. They won’t always understand me, but rules dictate they should, for english is the universal language.

***

What bad english could do to you...

... no internet access...

I asked for the password to the WI-FI connection in a hostel in Czech Republic. The lady told me, “It’s em-ow-a-one, all written down”. Ok. So I thought, the password was “MOAONE”, since I supposed “written down” meant that the number one should be written in letters. Got no response from the server. I tried “MOA1” and many variations of that, including “M0AONE” thinking that maybe – as though it seemed like a long shot – the lady knew that the number zero could be pronounced as *ow* in english. Nothing. Three days of frustrating attempts to get on, I finally begged the receptionist to write it down. It was “EMMA1”.

... no getting out of your own room...

I had a japanese roomy in Austria. One day, I asked her, when she was leaving, to leave the door open because I’d be out in a minute, and I had given my keys to another roomy. I said: “Would you mind leaving the door open? I’ll be out in a minute!”. She said “okay”, in that heavy japanese accent. She smiled, said goodbye and left. And closed the door. I had to call the reception, because the door would only open with a key, and I had none. I was stuck in the room for almost one hour.

... no contact lenses...

I was trying to buy contact lenses in Zurich. I was talking to the lady in charge of contact lenses, inside the shop. “Do you have lenses exactly like these?”. She looked at the box I had in my hands and said that yes, she did have them. “Can you sell them for me?”. The answer was no. Why? She told me they weren’t the same. And then I told her, “But you just told me they were the same, right?”. The answer was yes. “So, can you sell them?”. And she said, “No. Because they are different.” Okay then. No contact lenses for me today. Yuppie.

... no getting where you want to...

I had to ask for directions in France. I hadn’t a map, but if I had, I would have seen that the market I wanted to visit was five blocks straight ahead. I asked three different people for directions: an old lady in a shop told me to turn right and take the train; the young boy in MacDonald’s told me to turn right, walk two blocks, then turn left and walk three more blocks; the police officer said I should go back around two blocks. I didn’t believe any of them, and I tried all of the suggestions. Two hours later, when I finally gave up on finding the market, I actually found it. By myself.

... not entirely sure birthday parties...

I got to know a spanish girl in Italy. Her birthday was coming, the next week, and she wanted to tell me which day it was. Her pronunciation indicated to something between Tuesday and Thursday. When I asked her if it was the day before or after Wednesday, she answered: “No, it’s next week!”. We threw her a party on Tuesday. But we were never sure of the actual day of her birthday. We didn’t try asking her for numbers. She could only count to ten.

When you're gonna stop breaking my heart... Cuz' you can't deny you've blown my mind...”. I may be wrong but it seems to me that... E assim, tudo me faz lembrar você...

Butterfly

You cannot lose time. One might say you can misuse the time you have, but you cannot actually lose it. To lose something is to have it and then misplace it, or let it go, and then, in a next moment, not to have it anymore. You cannot do this with time, you cannot misplace it or let it go.

I would say then that you have, perhaps, misused the time you had. But you only misused it because now you think differently than before. If your mind and your thoughts were the same as they were years ago, you wouldn’t think you have wasted all your life, you would think that, no, everything is alright, everything is as it was supposed to be.

So, you did not lose time. You just changed. You changed your mind and your ways and your goals, and now you think that everything you have done up until this moment wasn’t right or accurate anymore. But that is part of life. It just means you’re growing up and evolving.

Do not think back with regret. Do not look back in your life and be bitter about it. Everything you’ve lived, experienced, makes you who you are right now. And even though you’re not proud of yourself today, I am absolutely sure that you have all the tools to change, to do anything you want. And if you are now a person with this potential, with this capacity, then something in your past, in your upbringing, must have been done right.

If you think you failed, you now have the opportunity to be successful. Because, you see, you did wrong, realized it, and now you can do right. It is so difficult to have been wrong and then to make things right. Some people just do things well, accordingly, and it’s actually pretty easy to be right when all you have been, in your life, is right. But you, no, you did it wrong. If you make it right now, sweetie, you’ll be the most successful of all.

You’ll also be the wisest. One can only truly understand life when they’ve failed at it, and had the opportunity to correct their mistakes. You can only be a worthy winner when you had already been a loser. You can only truly give something when you had it taken away from you.

You tell me now that you are so wrong in many ways, that you feel you have failed and that you don’t even know what to do, sometimes. All because of all this time you think you’ve lost. I would tell you then that I think you’re just like a butterfly. You spent a lot of time in a shell, forming yourself, and now you are free. Free to fly, to grace the world, and specially me, with your colors and your beauty. They say butterflies only live 24 hours, and I’ve never seen a butterfly flying desperately just because of that. No, they rise from their long hours forming themselves and enjoy their 24 hours, calmly and beautifully.

I am honored to have been able to watch this transformation of yours, to be somewhat part of it. It is like a snowstorm, or the constant movement of the sand in the desert – an actual “miracle” it is, to see a human being evolving, transforming, learning and changing.

I fell in love with two “Vanessa”s, and even though their names were supposed to portray them as butterflies, I don’t think they were one. At all. You, instead, are the most beautiful, most colorful, most graceful butterfly I have ever seen.

And don’t let life say “no” to you, honey. If you have only 24 hours to live, don’t take “no” as an answer.

Quem vai me devolver o tempo perdido?

Sinto-me defasada, atrasada.

Friend-Women

It pleases me to help people, I like being helpful and resourceful, I enjoy having people’s gratitude directed towards me. When I meet a group of people, I’m instantly the one providing whatever everyone needs. But I hardly connect with those I provide to. It takes a little bit of feedback for me to actually care for someone.

From all the people I’ve helped, few had the grace to actually acknowledge any of what I did. I’m not even going to try to justify it with ramblings of influencing factors, such as age or origin, because I know it has nothing to do with it. It’s simply a matter of breeding and character. I’m not even going to bother explaining why. It just is.

I wish I had more of those friends – those I gain through the feedback of my providing. I’ve come to realize that I enjoy them so very much. And since lately I’ve made two wonderful lady-friends, I thought I’d honor them, mentioning them here.

“E” was young and restless, but I suppose due to her culture, she was bound to reciprocate, or at least be grateful, for anything anyone did for her. She was polite and careful. She remembered my birthday. She remembered what I liked and I what I didn’t. She was grateful enough to actually do something for me without any ulterior reason behind it, or any personal gain. She remembered to write me, after she left.

“K” is older and centered, and extremely polite. She remembers when to say “thank you”, and has a special way of voicing her gratitude. She is capable of going over her own wishes just to do something she thinks I deserve. She doesn’t think twice about doing something that pleases me, because she really thinks I ought to have or do something. She thinks I’m worthy of something.

I consider them my real friends. I got their attention through my favors, showed them I have something special, something good in me, and that was enough for them to actually take the time to get to know me, to spend time with me and learn one thing or two about me. And vice-versa. Their grateful ways made me see them as worthy of my real attention, and I got to know them for real.

I’d like to believe I made friendship in its truest form. I’d like to believe it’s unbreakable what we have. I wish it was eternal, and even though I don’t believe it is, for nothing in this world lasts forever, sometimes I entertain myself thinking it is, what we have together it is, in fact, everlasting.

I will definitely never forget these people. The feeling I have for them is indeed eternal. And so very true.

The way I want...

I simply cannot work when things aren’t organized the way I want them to be.

a) I was working with six containers; I placed them side by side, and numbered them 1 to 6, left to right. But them Bitch 2 told me I couldn’t use all that space, and moved containers 1 and 2, placing them on the other side of the lab. That completely messed up my “order”. I spent the next 12 hours whining and bitching, while working, and had to recount and renumber the containers every single time I collected samples from them.

b) I needed 72 clean tubes to start a test. Since I could only find, in that hell of a laboratory, 60 tubes exactly the same, as in height and width, I postponed the test. I only did it when I had all of the 72 tubes the way I wanted them. I am incapable of handling different tubes when they represent the same sample and should, therefore, be exactly the same.

I simply cannot live when things aren’t ordered the way I want them to be.

c) When I got here, I had 18 pieces of cloth. All the hangers I found in the new apartment where different from each other. My clothes stayed on a box until I bought identical hangers. I only allowed differences between shirt hangers and pants hangers.

d) I started studying italian and used a green pen to highlight the important parts on my notebook. After I finished two 100 pages notebooks worth of studying, I ran out of green pens. I haven’t studied in two weeks because I cannot find another green pen the same shade as the one I had, and I can’t decide if I should just rewrite the whole two notebooks using another more usual pen.

e) I bought four round shaped glasses. My roomies broke 2 of them, and them bought me other 2 glasses, but square shaped one. I thanked them, and as soon as they were out of here, I turned the new glasses into ashtrays. Even if that means I have to always wash a glass right after I use it, otherwise I’ll run out of clean ones.

I simply cannot relate when people don’t function the way I want them to.

f) My mother is the most emotional woman I know. I cannot relate to her. Since her actions are based on what she’s feeling, and feelings don’t follow an order or a straight reason, I cannot understand her at all. Once I don’t understand her, we don’t get along well. Since we don’t get along well, I avoid her. And that’s why she, sometimes, hates me.

g) My brother is a junkie. And since drugs take away all reasoning from a person, he is completely unpredictable. Therefore, I also cannot relate to him, and I avoid him at all costs.

h) My girlfriend is also emotional. When she asks me “if you were home, why didn’t you texted me?”, and I answer truthfully “because I was tired and wanted to just read something”, she gets upset. She acts on her feeling, she gets hurt because I had a day off and preferred something else over spending time with her. She doesn’t reason that it’s normal for someone to want sometime alone. Sometimes I consider lying and answering something else, but I always forget to do it. I don’t realize she’s going to get hurt until after I said something hurtful.

Three Little Pigs

Once upon a time, there were three little pigs who spent a month in the home of a very clean ladybug. The ladybug loved the three little pigs very much for they were fun, polite and loving, but unfortunately the three little pigs were dirty and messy, and at the end of that month the very clean and orderly ladybug couldn’t wait for them to finally leave.

Little Pig Number One
Little Pig Number One was the sweetest of them all. She was kind and fun, and very similar to the ladybug. She was considerate and polite, and also very beautiful, and definitely the most mature of them all. The ladybug absolutely adored her and they became best friends. Little Pig Number One wasn’t messy, but didn’t help in the cleaning and wouldn’t do much at all. The ladybug was a little bit sad. She could handle Little Pig Number One, but not if there were two more messy little pigs. So, in the end, it would be best if Little Pig Number One went away.

Little Pig Number Two
Little Pig Number Two was the coolest of them all. She was interesting, different and chatty. She hit it off right away with the ladybug and they became very good friends. They would spend a lot of time together and would talk about many things that the ladybug was not comfortable talking about with the other two little pigs. But eventually it became very clear to the ladybug that Little Pig Number Two was very, very messy and dirty… she generated an absurdly high amount of garbage and was completely incapable of separating such garbage into recycling bins. That was unacceptable to the ladybug. Little Pig Number Two had to go.

Little Pig Number Three
Little Pig Number Three was the most childish of them all. She had seemed sweet and innocent at first, but soon it was clear that Little Pig Number Three was boring, annoying and just plain irritating. And oh, but Little Pig Number Three was dirty. Very, very messy and dirty. Nobody could use the bathroom after she had it for it would be a complete mess; water everywhere, bikinis hanging around and beauty products splattered all over the place. That was simply too traumatizing to the always organizing ladybug. Little Pig Number Three had better disappear from earth.

Awful, horrible people...

Sometimes I feel like an awful, horrible person. Because awful, horrible things happen to me and I believe wholeheartedly that those kinds of things only happen to awful, horrible people.

I was supposed to have the time of my life here, this was supposed to be the year of my life, but it seems that if I want it to be so, I have to be completely alone, and do it all by myself. Which makes no sense at all, since I’d need someone else to make this trip unforgettable. I’m a “sharing” person, a “people” person or something. But instead I find myself alone and the people who came here with me seem to care less if I am or not around. It’s crystal clear how much I annoy P, I guess we’re different enough to not be able to spend much time together. L lives in a world of her own, in which she’s the queen and the only one who matters. She forgets about me, often, and when she does remember, it seems that she’ll only do something for me if it doesn’t spoil her mighty plans for herself.

I’m not liked where I work. One boss thinks I’m unreliable, the other likes to yell at me. People I work with are always in a defensive position: “I did tell you about the meeting, you’re stupid enough to have thought you wouldn’t be part of it” or “I did that because it’s the right thing, if the consequences have fallen upon you, that’s only your fault”. I don’t get it. Why things are so complicated?

I’m not even going to start on my family. Instead of good wishes, I get complaints about everything. I’m travelling too much. I’m not working enough. I’m saving too much money. And then I’m spending too much money. My mother told me herself what an awful, horrible person I am. And I believe her. Because I’m surrounded by awful, horrible people, and everybody knows the apple doesn’t fall too far away from the tree.

I got robbed. Thank god I have a wonderful insurance company, and an amazing credit card company, because if it wasn’t for them, I’d have had so many more difficulties. But they cancelled my cards for me, sent me money, and my trip wasn’t lost. The day after, they called me to ask me if I was ok. My parents didn’t.

Although everything is fine now, I keep thinking about the money I lost. Everything happens for a reason. Why would I have to lose 600? The only good thing that came out of losing that much money was hearing my dad, on the phone, saying “forget about it now, try to have fun”. Was it worthy? Did I have to get robbed, and get lost and then desperate, for him to wish me a nice trip?

I do believe that almost everything can be purchased, and certainly everything has a price. “Have fun”; the two most expensive words I’ve ever bought.
